About health checks
We are Suffolk GP Federation. We are a group of doctors surgeries that work together to support people’s health in our area.
We are offering people in Suffolk and Waveney aged between 40 and 74 years old a free health check.
A health check looks at different things to do with your health. It can:
- Help to catch any health problems early. Then you can quickly get the help you need.
- Give you advice about ways to be healthier. Things like stopping smoking, doing exercise or eating healthy foods.
- Help you to have better health and wellbeing. Wellbeing means keeping happy and healthy in your body and mind.
You should have a health check once every 5 years.
How a health check can help you
A health check can help to stop you from getting some health problems. Things like:
- Heart problems.
- Stroke. A stroke is when blood stops flowing to part of your brain. It can stop your brain from working properly.
- Diabetes. Diabetes is an illness where your body cannot control the right amount of sugar in your blood.
- Kidney problems. Your kidneys are the part of your body that help to clean your blood.
- Dementia. We say dementia like this: dee men sha. Dementia is the name for different illnesses that cause parts of the brain to stop working properly.
What happens at a health check
Healthcare staff will ask you some questions about your health. Things like:
- What you eat and drink.
- If you smoke.
- If you do any exercise.
- If you have any health problems.
- If anyone in your family has any serious problems with their health.
They will check your height, weight and blood pressure. Blood pressure is how hard your heart is working to pump blood around your body.
Staff will also take a little bit of blood from your finger. This might sting a bit but not for very long.
Staff will then check your blood to see how much cholesterol is in it. We say cholesterol like this: kol est er rol. Cholesterol is a type of fat that moves around in your blood. Too much cholesterol can make it hard for blood to move around your body.
What happens after the health check
After the health check, staff will look at all of the information about your health. They will tell you how you can keep fit and well.
At your check, staff might say that you need some medicine or treatment. You will need to make an appointment to see the doctor for this.
How you can get a health check
You can have a health check if you do not already have any health conditions.
You can ask us for a free health check.
At the side of this page near the top, click on the button that says request an appointment. It will take you to a new page with a form to fill in. The form will ask you some questions. Things like:
- Where you would like to have your health check
and
- What day and time you would like to come for your health check.
When you have filled in the form, we will send you a text message or an email about your appointment.
